Motor Traders Internal Risks Insurance

Motor Traders Internal Risks covers insured vehicles while they are at the business premises for sale, service, repair, storage or safekeeping. Depending on the wording, it can respond to accidental damage, fire, theft or malicious damage. It is not a substitute for buildings, contents, public liability or road-risk cover.

What is normally covered

  • Customer vehicles left for service, repair or fitment
  • Vehicle stock held for sale at the declared premises
  • Accidental collision or impact inside the workshop or yard
  • Fire, explosion and specified natural perils
  • Theft following the policy’s required security or forcible-entry conditions
  • Vehicles temporarily parked within the declared risk address

What is normally excluded

  • Vehicles being driven on a public road
  • Wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown
  • The defective part or the cost of correcting poor work
  • Unexplained disappearance, fraud or employee dishonesty unless extended
  • Loss where keys, access control or minimum security conditions were not followed
  • Undeclared premises, activities or vehicle categories

An electrical fire starts after hours in a mechanical workshop in Bellville and damages three customers’ vehicles parked in locked service bays.

How cover may respond: Internal risks may pay the insured value of the damaged vehicles, subject to the fire cover, sums insured, excess and compliance with fire-protection conditions.

Important: Damage to tools, lifts and the building would usually fall under separate property sections.
