Motor trade cover explained

Public Liability for Motor Workshops

Public liability protects a workshop against legal liability for accidental bodily injury or third-party property damage arising from its business. It can cover defence costs with insurer consent. It normally excludes vehicles in the workshop’s care and claims arising from defective work unless the relevant extensions are added.

What is normally covered

  • A customer or supplier injured at the premises
  • Accidental damage to third-party property not in your custody
  • Legal defence costs for an insured claim
  • Products or completed-operations liability where included
  • Tenant’s liability where stated

What is normally excluded

  • Employee injury covered by COIDA or other employment arrangements
  • Customer vehicles in care, custody or control
  • Defective workmanship or products unless extended
  • Pollution unless sudden and accidental cover applies
  • Fines, penalties and deliberate acts
  • Motor liability that belongs under a vehicle policy
Realistic claim example

A customer slips on oil in reception

A customer walks through the workshop reception, slips on oil tracked onto the tiled floor and fractures a wrist.

How cover may respond: Public liability may cover the workshop’s legal liability, agreed medical damages and defence costs if negligence is established.

Important: The insurer will request incident records, CCTV, cleaning logs and witness statements.
